Polish Poppy Seed Roll (Makowiec)
Poppy seed roll makaweic is a delight that my family used to serve on Christmas and Easter. It is common to see the sweet bread on most family gatherings in a polish family. More than anything this bread brings back so many memories and it’s perfect to serve when having a guest over for coffee or tea. It was so much fun to make and I can’t believe it turned out so good. I added a little Ameretto Disaronno and orange zest to bring it a bright flavor. So good!

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt.
Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter to the flour. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Make the Filling:
In a saucepan, bring milk to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in poppy seeds, sugar, and vanilla extract.
Allow the mixture to cool before using.
optional- I added a little orange zest, almond extract and some Ameretto Disaronno
You can also add some finely chopped almond to the mix for some added texture
Assemble the Roll:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other and place it seam-side down in a greased baking pan lined with parchment paper
Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow it to cool slightly before slicing and serving.
